Social Media May Be The Cause Of Many Teen Mental Disorders

Social media is not necessarily good for your kids.

A new study found that the amount of U.S. teens and young adults who experienced mental distress, depression and suicidal thoughts or actions rose significantly over the last ten years. There was an especially large spike in 2011, which researchers cite as the year that social media emerged. The most affected were females and those at higher income levels.

The number of adolescents who had symptoms consistent with major depression between 2005 and 2017 increased more than 50-percent, and the number of young adults with such systems in that time jumped more than 60 percent. The amount of young adults who said they had experienced serious psychological distress between 2008 to 2017 also rose 71-percent.

What do researchers say is really at core of this probem? Increased time on social media and electronic communication and serious lack of sleep. The study was published by the American Psychological Association.
