Every Tuesday, Bernie Weiner rolls his cart through the halls of Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital and patients can’t wait to see him. Bernie’s been volunteering here for 23 years, selling sweets to staff and patients, and he’s earned the nickname “Candyman.”
When folks find out Bernie is 90, they’re always surprised because he looks and acts much younger. And the Candyman plans to make his weekly visits as long as he’s able.
“All my friends my age are dead, seriously. They retire, they sit on their rear ends and that’s the end of them,” Bernie explains. “I like to keep busy. It makes me feel good.”
