The Ford Explorer owners say some sort of rotten egg or sulfur odor is coming through the vents when the air conditioning is running. In a 2015 deposition, a Ford representative says it appeared to be a "design issue" that Ford was working on. But the auto builder did admit to “CBS News” that in rare occurrences, there have been time when customers detected an exhaust odor in Explorers.
In one case, Newport Beach police officer Brian McDowell passed out behind the wheel of his 2014 Ford Explorer police cruiser and crashed into a tree while responding to a non-emergency call. Doctors could find no cause for his condition. McDowell believes it was carbon monoxide.
Ford says the smell issue "poses no safety" risks. Between 2011 and 2017, 450 Explorer owners filed complaints about the odor issue. A federal investigation is now underway.Source: CBS Detroit
