It was back on March 29, 1967 that Janet Haines started working as a crossing guard in Falls Church, Virginia. And 50 years later, she’s still helping people cross that same corner.
The 91-year-old says she loves the “pleasant work environment” on her corner near St. James Catholic School. To honor her 50-year work anniversary, the school surprised her with a celebration of her service. The students, staff, some police officers, and even the mayor came out to show their appreciation for Haines.
“She always has a smile for everybody,” Sister Mary Sue Carwile, the principal at St. James says of their long-standing crossing guard. “I call her our ambassador to the world of kindness and care.”
