Live Greener Without Breaking The Bank

Going greener doesn’t have to cost a fortune. There’s a lot more to it than just buying the expensive eco-friendly products. You can conserve energy and help the planet without blowing the budget. Here’s how to get started.

  • Use a low-flow showerhead - You can buy one for about $8 and it’ll save you between 25 and 60% less water each shower.
  • Take public or shared transportation - With 25% of the pollution in the U.S. coming from transportation, it makes sense to try public transportation, carpooling, and sharing rides when you can.
  • Air-dry your laundry - Your clothes dryer is one of the biggest uses of energy in the home, so cut down on your power bill by using a drying rack.
  • Make your own cleaning detergents - Forget toxic chemicals, all you need are vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda to DIY cleaning products for the home.
  • Use reusable shopping bags - Plastic shopping bags are often made from petroleum oil and can take up to 1000 years to decompose, so bring reusables instead.
  • Stop using plastic utensils - Sure, it’s convenient, but it’s really bad for the environment. In 2008 alone, single-use plastics made up 13 million tons of waste!
