Why Social Anxiety And Social Media Are A Bad Mix

A recent study is shedding light on whether there's a connection between heavy social media use and feelings of isolation. Doctor Joseph Rock with the Cleveland Clinic didn't take part in the study, but says it showed how heavy social media use can be problematic for people who already struggle with social anxiety.

The study looked at 17-hundred people between the ages of 19 and 32. Researchers found that those who spent the most time on social media had the highest likelihood of feeling socially isolated. Doctor Rock says one surprising finding from the study had to do with people who weren't socially isolated to begin with.

He says those folks had the tendency to back off of social contact when they engaged in more social media use.
