Yoga can be just as effective as physical therapy when it comes to relieving back pain.
Researchers at Boston Medical Center developed an effective yoga program with the help of doctors, therapists and yoga instructors. A key benefit of yoga is it helps people avoid taking pain medication, something recommended by the American College of Physicians.
The scientists remind, though that this only holds true for average back pain and certain poses should be avoided.
Patients in the yoga and physical therapy groups showed about the same level of improvement over several weeks. The new findings were published Monday in the "Annals of Internal Medicine."
