A growing trend known as orthorexia nervosa has more health professionals seeing people take healthy eating to the extreme.
Doctor Susan Albers with the Cleveland Clinic says there are red flags for people suffering from orthorexia. The biggest red flag, she says, is spending all of your time thinking about what you eat, or don't eat. Doctor Albers says orthorexia is generally defined as an unhealthy obsession with healthy food. It's considered to be an extreme focus on the quality of what you're eating instead of the quantity, which is different from traditional eating disorders like anorexia. She says often a person's intentions start out great but then it turns into an obsession.
