Researchers at the University of Texas say the hand-held device is like a "pen" that identifies cancerous tissue quickly, making surgery to remove a tumor safer and more precise. The MasSpec pen finds cancer cells in tissue surrounding the tumor, which typically a very difficult task.
The published research suggests that the device is more than 96-percent accurate. A professor at the University of Texas in Austin said the tool is elegant and simple and can be in the hands of surgeons in a short time.
