We didn’t invent the wheel when it comes to pumpkin spice.
Though we enjoy our PSLs and Pumpkin Oreos among other things, the flavor has hooked humans for centuries! The Turkish tradition of spicing up coffee goes back centuries.
In Medieval times, it was used as medicine, in wines, and in something called “Sauce of the Lords.” In France, Pumpkin cake, with cooked pumpkin mixed with almonds and sprinkled with sugar, was invented in the 1650s.
And…Pumpkin beer was introduced in the 1770’s! It wasn’t until the 1950s when spice company McCormick introduced pumpkin spice to the world.
We are so glad they did!
