More people may be affected by the massive data breach at Equifax than previously thought.
An investigation by cybersecurity firm Mandiant has found another two-and-a-half-million additional U.S. consumers who could be impacted. That would bring the total to 145-point-five million consumers. Mandiant has been retained by Equifax to investigate the breach.
Equifax is one of the nation's three major credit reporting agencies. The company's new CEO, Paulino do Rego Barros Jr. said the company is continuing to take steps to review and enhance its cybersecurity.
The credit reporting firm’s former CEO Richard Smith will sit before House subcommittee today. In advance of the testimony, some of his comments were shared online. They include the revelation that the hack was possible because someone in Equifax's security department didn’t patch a flaw the company had been alerted to by the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team.
