Verizon Wireless is looking to the heavens for help.
The company is installing cell phone antennas on church steeples in Northern California and offering to build a steeple if a church doesn't already have one. It's planning to erect a 62-foot steeple on Santa Rosa's Community Baptist Church, featuring an array of antennas designed to boost service on the city's east side.
Earlier this year, a half dozen antennas went live on a 68-foot steeple Verizon paid to build on top of Westview Christian Church in southwest Santa Rosa. It's also paying the churches an unspecified sum to lease the space and store its equipment.
Wireless companies do their best to “camouflage” towers so the communities are comfortable with the items being there.
