Here's How To Be a Happier Person Today!

Life can be stressful any time, but 2020 has been in overdrive. Even if you’re doing a good job of coping with everything this year has handed you, we could all use some mood-boosting tips as we head into the dark winter months. Want to feel a little happier each day? Take a break from doomscrolling and try these therapist-approved tips.

  • Practice gratitude - Instead of focusing on what’s not going well in your life, turn your attention to the things you appreciate. To make this a habit in your daily life, start a gratitude list where you write down three things you’re thankful for - big or small - every day.
  • Do one thing every day that helps you unwind - It could be anything from going for a quick walk to reading in the tub to catching up with your BFF, as long as you enjoy it and it helps you relax, make time for it.
  • Write in a journal - Research shows that journaling can help with depression, anxiety, and stress management. Writing helps get your thoughts and fears out of your racing mind and onto paper and there’s no wrong way to do it. And if you reflect on what you’re grateful for? Even better.
  • Stay in touch with family and friends - Social interactions play a big part in our happiness, but the pandemic has made this more challenging. That’s why it’s even more important to have those phone dates with besties and relatives if you’re not getting together in person.
  • Really savor the good times - Be mindful of the moment you’re in so you can really appreciate it while it's happening. Focus on the joy something brings you and how lucky you are to experience it to really boost your mood and increase gratitude.
  • Practice kindness - Want to really get the good feels flowing? Do something nice for someone else. Acts of kindness not only improve your mood, but they help those social connections as well. And it doesn’t have to be a grand gesture, just giving someone a compliment counts, too.
