New Phone Etiquette for 2023

If you call someone without texting them first, you're doing it all wrong, according to the new rules of phone etiquette. The Washington Post spoke with people of all generations about their biggest pet peeves regarding the phone and then ran their findings by an etiquette expert to compile a list of guidelines for proper phone use. Here are some of the rules they came up with:

  • Don't leave a voicemail. No one listens to voicemails anymore. If you have important information to share, do it in a text.
  •
  • Text before calling. Calling someone without warning can put stress on the other person. You should text them first and ask if they are available to chat.
  •
  • You do not need to answer the call if it's not a good time. Mute the call and either text or call back when it's convenient for you.
  •
  • Emotions are for voice, facts are for text. Any message involving opinions or emotional matters like arguments should be done in a phone call. Things like making plans for relaying some factual information should be done in a text.
  •
  • Unless it’s an emergency, please hold. If someone doesn't answer your call, do not hang up and call right back again. If it's an emergency, tell them in a text.
  •
  • Don't use speakerphone in public. This should go without saying.
